Sensodyne toothpaste is one of the first "desensitizer" toothpastes to come on the market. There have been many copy-cat toothpastes that have tried to emmulate Sensodyne, but the original is hard to beat.Sensitive teeth can happen for a variety of reasons. The first and foremost is when the gum tissue receeds and exposes the much more sentitive root surface. The root surface has tiny pores that lead directly to the nerve center, or pulp, of the tooth. When an irritating substance, (such as sugars, and hot or cold foods or liquids), enter these pores, they cause pain in the tooth. Sensodyne toothpaste has an ingredient in it (Potassium Nitrate) that is designed to block these pores.
Sensodyne toothpaste works as advertized. However, to get maximum benefit from it, it must be used consistently; this means using it 2-3 times per day for at least a 2-week span. The effect of Sensodyne is cummulative, so the longer you use it, the faster and better it works!
As a dentist, I recommend Sensodyne to my patients with sensitive teeth. If Sensodyne does not work for you, then the problem with the tooth is more than just a toothpaste can fix. I recommend that a dentist look into the problem if you get no relief from Sensodyne.

i sometimes have sensitive teeth (to cold), but since using this every day, i dont have any complaints.idk about whitening, but that would have been a side benefit.A few years ago, I developed sensitive teeth for no discernible reason. Any food or drink I consumed above or below room temperature caused much pain. Sensodyne has been a savior. Not only does it resolve the sensitivity, the extra whitening really works. The taste is pleasant too. In fact, I'd use this toothpaste now even if I stopped having pain.
On that note, it's important to realize that Sensodyne isn't a cure. It bubbles into and provides a barrier for the angry nerve endings. If you're traveling be sure to bring a tube with you because the pain will return after a couple of days with some other brand.
Good product, does exactly what it claims, Amazon has a competitive price and it's in a convenient 3-pack. And I can eat ice cream again! What's not to like? :-)A few months ago, I awoke one morning with a very sensitive upper front tooth.Each time a cold substance (even a rush of air) passed over that tooth, it would send a jolt of pain through my mouth.
I was puzzled by this, as I had never had trouble with teeth sensitivity before, but on the advice of my Dad (a dentist) I purchased this product.
After just a few days of rubbing this paste on the sensitive tooth, my problem completely disappeared and I have not had any problems since!I now alternate brushing with this product and a better-tasting paste (the chalky taste is the one downside of Sensodyne) and that system seems to prevent any sensitivity from developing.
Make sure however, that whatever sensitivity-relieving product you purchase (whether Sensodyne or others) contains the active ingredient Potassium Nitrate (5%), which will fill in the areas in the tooth that are exposed to the cold elements.
