The key ingredient for this formulation is Hydrogen Peroxide. My dentist recommended this Listerine to me. It works. The flavor isn't the best (hence the subtraction of one star), but the foaming action gets cleaning power everywhere in your mouth. I imagine the stuff penetrating the gum line between my teeth. My tongue gets awfully foamy, so I keep spitting for several minutes after rinsing (a good thing, because you don't want to swallow much of the flouride in the formula). Speaking of flouride, the sodium flouride is listed at 0.0221% concentration (0.01% w/v flouride ion). This concentration of flouride is similar to the 0.02% concentration found in a leading anticavity rinse (ACT 2x daily rinse).
