A while ago my dentist made me custom trays and sold me some optic white for $250. He wanted $100 for a touch up refill on the optic white and the fact I can get it online for less than $40 is ridiculous. It worked well then and it's working well now. My teeth are fortunately somewhat insensitive to the bleaching process, but I dread the idea of zingers or gum ulcers... I would be very cautious with any whitening product, but the fact that Colgate sells online and over the counter trays with 6-10% makes the 9% trays a very reasonable percentage of hydrogen peroxide.The fact that the UK has made it illegal to sell tooth whitening products with a percentage of hydrogen peroxide greater than 0.1% without a dental prescription may be a little over the top. One study tested using 38% hydrogen peroxide once a week for 4 weeks and found no significant change in the enamel.Journal of the American Dental Association (April 2010, Vol. 141:4, pp. 449-454). Carbamide peroxide is also a great option which has a longer shelf life due it being activated by water to form hydrogen peroxide, but it also takes 15 or so minutes for the carbamide to break down into hydrogen peroxide requiring more time for the trays to be in my mouth. A study at University of Florida by Proctor and Gamble found that this often reduced sensitivity and results. When in doubt wikipedia or maybe even ask your dentist or doctor for more advice. Since my doctor recommended it last time, I'm sticking with it despite a shelf life of a little over a year.
