The whitening solution is clumpy. It does not apply evenly, and you have to apply several coats. So you are left with an unnatural, discolored, film on your teeth that will not last. Save your money.

I had white veneer bonding over my teeth and now after so many years there is a slight discoloration, and they are not the bright glamourous white that they were. This product stated it would cover silver in your mouth....doesn't even cover a slight discoloration, only a bit if you apply at least 3 or 4 thin coats. The tube is very small, so 3 or 4 thin coats will run it out quick. Very hard to use on your bottom teeth. Very disappointed with this product. If it doesn't work for me, then I feel sorry for anyone with bad teeth ordering it and hoping for a nice smile. Spend your money on a better product.

I hoped this would help with discoloration on a crown and although there was some extremely modest improvement, any chewing or licking of the front tooth wiped that out. Nope not the answer for me.

This product is effective at whitening. However, I did have tooth sensitivity when I tried using it more than once a day. So I did some research. The European Union's equivalent of the FDA says, "The use of toothpastes, mouth rinses and tooth whiteners containing up to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide does not pose a risk to the health of the consumer. Toothpastes and mouth rinses should not contain more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide." Arm & Hammer does NOT state how much hydrogen peroxide is in this product, so I wrote and asked them. They replied that: "The percentage of Hydrogen peroxide is proprietary." I wrote back and said I was concerned about safety. I only wanted to know whether the amount was less than 0.1%, not the specific amount. They never answered. I still use it occasionally, but I would not feel safe using it often.

A few thoughts on this product and teeth-whitening in general:

* Peroxide gels like this and the in-office dental equivalent are, far and way, the preferred method of teeth whitening. In my experience, whitening toothpaste is for maintenance only, whitening strips are worthless, and no drugstore kit gives results worth mentioning. The latter two simply don't merit your time.

* You'll want custom-molded trays to use peroxide this strong. They'll cost $300 to have done on-site with a dentist or around $50 as a send-away kit with molding material. Cheap heat-and-wear mouthpieces won't fit properly nor provide gum shielding, and are therefore not good enough. Custom trays will last for years. They're absolutely worth the expense and I wouldn't buy this product, or any serious gel, without them.

* There's enough gel in this kit to last at least ten whitening sessions. If kept in a refrigerator, the gel will expire in about two years. Bleaching sessions can be for any duration from 30 minutes to multiple hours. The gel neutralizes itself over time, so most of the bleaching effect occurs in the first hour or two. Wearing overnight is not advisable; I wouldn't go higher than 15% solution for that.

* This is a powerful, but not overpowering gel. With my custom trays, I had no trouble with two back-to-back bleaching sessions, each for 90 minutes. The only irritation was where a small amount of gel had touched my gums. My teeth are not ordinarily prone to cold or heat sensitivity. I noticed mild cold sensitivity that lasted an hour or two after bleaching. Some kits from this company include a remineralization gel that I did not need, but I have used it in the past and it's worth having if you've never bleached before and haven't discovered your tolerance.

* My results were very good from this single session starting from an average shade for a non-smoker, though not Hollywood white. That would probably take two more sessions. Changes become less dramatic with additional sessions. If you take no special care to avoid dark beverages (soda, wine, coffee), the results will last about six months. If you do avoid those beverages, particularly in the first few days after bleaching, your teeth may maintain the new shade for a year or more.

* The shade chart in this product won't be useful if your teeth are already fairly white. The gradients on the brighter side of the scale are too far apart, so even a visible shift may not register a new tone. The brightest tone won't be bright enough for some.

I just received my package. My order came from India, so shipping was long but came a full week before the first expected Arrive By Date. I just rubbed the dark, clove-herb smelling fine powder into my gums. It's a taste I'll probably like more as I use it, but for a first time, it's not bad. Let me start by saying I did not use this product for myself I used it on my mother. She has no health insurance, smokes over a pack a day, and drinks tea at least 5 times a day. There is one major difference that most people will overlook and that is there is no Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in this product. There is research out there that this inactive ingredient will cause sloughing in the mouth which can lead to cancor sores or mouth ulcers. My hygienist recommended that I switch to an SLS-free toothpaste when I started getting really bad canker sores (aka aphthous ulcers, and not to be confused with cold sores). Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a foaming agent that's used in nearly all toothpastes (not to mention shampoos and other washes) on the market.

It took me a few years of struggling before I happened upon this toothpaste. Most other SLS-free toothpastes on the market are "natural" (though Toms of Maine uses SLS) and a lot of them are slimy. Furthermore, many use cinnamon as a flavoring, which can also be irritating. This toothpaste foams nicely and tastes pleasant. I've been using it for several years now and it's the number one factor in controlling my canker sores.

I can see that some people have complained about this toothpaste as compared to other "sensitive" toothpastes, and apparently it's not stellar, but I prefer it to the other varieties of Sensodyne. I can definitely say though that for SLS-free options, I've found nothing better.

My boyfriend bought this to even out the discoloration of his teeth and after using it for the recommended 4 weeks told me to try it.I have always had rough teeth, with lots ridges, and i was always getting tiny chips on the bottom of my front teeth. I received this 4 oz. tube from a dental hygienist after getting my teeth cleaned. She said my gums need better care, especially after I had been using a whitening mouthwash that irritated the tissue and caused my mouth to peel every morning. Ironically, this toothpaste also makes my mouth peel and I only use it once a day (I only brush my teeth at night, usually). It doesn't hurt and I don't notice any other side effects except for this. My gums aren't peeling just my cheek tissue, specifically the part resting against my lower gums/teeth. I'm not really sure what to make of that as it doesn't seem particularly harmful. This toothpaste does tingle more than typical toothpaste. I'm not sure if my mouth peels because it is trying to get rid of bacteria or if it peels simply because of the toothpaste. This specifically happens the morning after I use this toothpaste. If I use a different toothpaste one night, the next morning my mouth is fine no peeling.

I don't have any form of gingivitis, but I figured I would use this toothpaste to keep myself from ever developing problems. Boy, was that a mistake! As many other reviews have states, this toothpaste horribly dried my mouth out and caused white film to come off of my gums and cheeks. I find this a tad ironic as having a dry mouth can cause you to develop gum and teeth problems.

If it works wonders for you, keep on using it. For me, I'll stick to the other amazing Crest products.

Crest should find a way to fix this "dries my mouth out" problem.

Dr. Ken's Toothpaste

Dr. Ken's is the first non-fluoride toothpaste I've used.I decided to give it a try because it's made from all natural ingredients.

Although the flavor claims to be "wintergreen", it taste more like a stevia-flavored tea.The brown gel isn't very overpowering.It seems a bit weaker than some of the top namebrand flouride toothpaste (Colgate, Crest).There is also less foam when brushing with this gel, so you won't look like Cujoif you enjoy using a lot of paste.

The taste of food isn't distorted like it would be after brushing with minty toothpaste.I was pleasantly surprised when I drank orange juice after brushing with Dr. Ken'sIt tasted the way orange juice should taste!

Bottom line, I think it's a good product.However, if you desire a stronger toothpaste that will give you a "fresh breath" feeling, this particular product may not be the thing to purchase.

Toothpaste doesn't lather up at all and many times the paste fell off the brush when I would lightly wet it like other toothpastes. As much as I want to use organic products I will not purchase again.

I am a dentist who recommends Sensodyne toothpaste for my patients with sensitive teeth. I give it 5-stars because it has a proven track-record of many years of effectiveness.

The active ingredient in any toothpaste that is advertized as a "desensitizing toothpaste" is potassium nitrate. Potassium nitrate works by plugging the micro dentinal tubules that communicate directly with the pulp (nerve center) of the tooth. Most people have sensitive teeth because of gum recession exposing the root surface, (or thinning enamel) thus exposing the dentinal tubules. If the tubules are touched, exposed to sugar, or cold, fluid moves in the tubule and this is perceived as pain. With repeated exposure, potassium nitrate effectively plugs up the dentinal tubules to lessen or completely eliminate sensitivity.

This toothpaste will not work on teeth with cavities, or teeth with abscesses it only works on teeth with exposed dentinal tubules.

It is also important to realize that Sensodyne does not work immediately. It takes up to 2-4 weeks of continuous daily exposure for the product to work.

Sensodyne can be used as a "stand-alone" toothpaste, since it has fluoride in it, or it can be used just for sensitive areas.

Finally, the effect of the potassium nitrate will wear off over time, so it is likely one will need to repeat the treatment as sensitivity returns.

This is a great product for those with sensitive teeth.

A few months ago, I awoke one morning with a very sensitive upper front tooth.Each time a cold substance (even a rush of air) passed over that tooth, it would send a jolt of pain through my mouth.

Arm & Hammer Arm & Hammer Spinbrush Pro Clean Powered Toothbrush Soft

This is a fantastic toothbrush, but apparently it is not compatible with peroxide & baking soda toothpaste. I think there have been some instances of brush heads breaking in peoples' mouths. Crest has pulled the product from retailers and claims to be working on the problem.

I hope they get the problem fixed and re-introduce the product. For now, I can't find replacement heads anywhere.

The toothbrush itself works great. But getting the battery cover off and putting it back on is nearly impossible!And we've owned at least 3 or 4 in the past 5 years and every one has been the same.I end up in such a rage every time I have to change the batteries that everybody gets as far away from me as they can.The only reason I haven't bought a different brand is because when I see a sale on replacement heads or spinbrushes themselves I buy them because I still have a brush that works or extra heads at home.But if you have a lot of time and a lot of patience for difficult tasks, it's a great toothbrush.

My sister and her husband each have a Crest SpinBrush and kept telling me how great they are.I must say, I'm a believer now.I have lived with gingivitis for years.I brush every day, but my flossing habits aren't the best.Only having used this product for a week and I can already see a reduction in gum swelling.REALLY! ONE WEEK!I'm still amazed.

Yes, it's makes noise, but it's not deafening.It's not a loud as say a hair trimmer, so yes it's very tolerable.If you're worried about the noise being amplified by your jawbone inside your head, relax.When it's just the bristles against your teeth, there's no noise, but if the back of the brush head touches an opposing tooth, yup your head rings out, but that only happens once or twice to me when brushing.

The main thing that surprised me is it's very relaxing to brush my teeth now.I never timed my brush habits, but I think I'm taking longer.The drum of the motor and the feel of the moving bristles on my teeth is somewhat soothing.Maybe I'm just crazy, wouldn't be the first time.

The ONLY reason I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 stars is because now that I've checked the replacement heads for the Crest are a little more expensive that for other competing models.Still worth it for better gum health though!

Update 10/23/09:OK I'm giving it 5 out of 5 stars.I just ordered/received the Amazon soft bristle replacements and the cost was for two 2 packs (that's 4 heads).That's a reasonable price.Also, the original alkalines still going strong!

I had thought about getting an electric toothbrush but wasn't about lay out a lot of money for one and then have to pay an arm and a leg for brush replacements.

My dental hygenist while not suggesting a particular brand said that it wasn't necessary to pay a lot for one either that good electric toothbrushes that would do a good job could be purchased rather inexpensively.

I checked out a lot ofelectric toothbrushes on the web and their user reviews. Some were very pricey...definately out of my league.

On Consumer Research I noted the Spinbrush had a nice review from a study done by the American Dental Association noting that up to 70% of dental plaque was removed with a Spinbrush.Whatsmore you could pick one up for as little as 12 bucks.Well, I said to myself, if the ADA gives it a good report and its not all that expensive and the user reviews were generally favorable to the product I should purchase one.

To my delight the Spinbrush was on sale at Target for 9.50 last December.So I got the Spinbrush anda couple of brush heads that were also marked down.

Right away I noticed how clean my teeth feel.Compared to my old manual toothbrush the Spinbrush always does anice job.

The alkaline AA batteries that came with the Spinbrush lasted about 4 weeks and were replaced with rechargeable AA's.(I never buy alkaline batteries).

I notice my rechargable AA's are now approaching5 weeks of use and seem to be going strong. That's twice a day use of at least 2 mins per brushing.

Darned if I can come up with anything negative about the Spinbrush....except when I went to replace the batteries I had a bit of a challenge (as some other reviewers have indicated) in removing the cap at the base of the brush.But figured it out rather quickly.

Here's how to remove the cap:

Place the Spinbrush on the edge of a table with the brush facing AWAY from you.The cap end of the Spinbrush should be extended out over the table edge just a half inch or so beyondwhere the cap attatches to the handle of the Spinbrush.Hold the Spinbrush in place with your left and with the heel of the palm of your right hand push down on the cap and it will open.

I am very pleased with the Spinbrush and have no problem in recommending it.

The batteries that come with the brush, run out of charge quickly. So I decided to put in my own rechargeable batteries. The bottom cover is really difficult to take off. I was able to do it by gripping both ends with rubber grippers. But once the cap was off, to replace the cover with new batteries is an impossible task. Even my hubby tried to shut it closed and he couldn't do it.
